What happens in each stage›
- Recruiter / Initial Conversation
- ~30 min spoken, non-technical. Motivation, background, logistics, and level calibration.
- Life Story Interview
- ~45-60 min spoken behavioral round, Shopify's signature stage. Narrative walk-through of your career and key decisions; interviewer digs into the 'why' behind each transition, setbacks, and growth. Often run by a hiring manager or senior engineer.
- Technical / Craft Interview
- ~45-60 min live pair-programming. One or two rounds depending on level. Collaborative work on a practical/applied problem with follow-ups that extend it; interviewer acts as a pairing partner.
- System / Technical Design Interview
- ~45-60 min spoken, senior/staff (L6+) primarily. Open-ended, commerce-flavored architecture discussion. Junior/mid loops often skip this or fold a lighter 'how would you build X' into the technical round.
- Team Match / Values & Debrief
- Final hiring-manager or values conversation and debrief leading to a decision. Not a distinct simulatable round.
