Databricks

A loop that codes on a laptop with runnable code, sometimes hands you an unfamiliar language to see whether you can read the docs, and includes a concurrency round. Ownership and learning agility are the signals.

The Databricks process

3 of 6 stages you can practise here

  1. 01

    Conversational and non-technical

    motivationbackground fitcommunication
  2. 02
    Online Assessment (OA)

~70-min proctored coding test (CodeSignal/HackerRank), typically ~4 questions mixing standard data-structure work with a data-manipulation twist. Common for new-grad/many IC pipelines; some experienced candidates skip straight to the phone screen. Async, so simulated by the phone-screen coding round. Corresponds to Databricks' 'Skill assessments' stage.

  3. 03

One hour of live coding in a shared runnable editor

    correctnesscode qualitycomplexity
  4. 04
    Virtual Onsite ('Loop')

5-6 interviews, fully virtual over Google Meet (confirmed on Databricks' own prep page). Stable core: 2 coding rounds (one with a data-processing slant), 1 dedicated concurrency/multithreading round, 1 system design, 1 behavioral/values with a hiring manager.

The defining Databricks round: ~1 hour writing correct multithreaded code while the interviewer actively watches for the race condition you didn't catch

~1 hour of spoken design, often in a shared Google Doc

    Reference Checks

Explicitly listed as stage 6 of Databricks' published 7-stage process.

  6. 06
Hiring Committee + VP of Engineering sign-off

Decision made by committee from the full packet rather than round-by-round, which is why turnaround feels slow. Committee/VP specifics are candidate-reported, not officially published.

Common questions

What tool does Databricks use for interviews?
Databricks' own prep page states: 'We conduct virtual interviews using Google Meet unless otherwise stated by your Recruiter.' Candidates are advised to test audio and camera beforehand and to practice screen-sharing. Live coding is done in a shared runnable editor (CoderPad-style on the phone screen).
What behavioral questions does Databricks ask?
Databricks' prep page lists these exact stems: 'Tell me about a time...', 'Describe a situation...', 'Give an example of...', and 'How do you...?' It says these help them understand how you work, learn, collaborate, and navigate challenges, so bring real past examples (STAR).
How many stages are in the Databricks hiring process?
Databricks outlines a 7-stage process: identifying opportunities, applying online, connecting with Talent Acquisition, skill assessments, interviewing, reference checks, and decision and offer.
Do I code in my own IDE on my own laptop?
No. Candidate reports do not support coding in a personal IDE with local compilation. The distinctive expectation is code that actually compiles, runs, and passes test cases in a shared editor, not whiteboard pseudocode. Treat the signature as 'runnable, production-quality code that passes tests.'
