Capital One

A centralized, program-based pipeline that ends in a Power Day of back-to-back virtual interviews. The distinctive part for engineers: Capital One lists a business case interview as a required Power Day component for its Technology Development Program, alongside behavioral and technical rounds.

Common questions

What is Capital One's Power Day?
Power Day is Capital One's final round: a series of back-to-back virtual interviews held on Zoom, with candidates required to stay on video throughout. What it contains depends on the program. For the Technology Development Program, Capital One lists behavioral, case and technical interviews.
Does Capital One really give software candidates a case interview?
Yes. Capital One lists case interviews as required for its Technology Development Program and Internship, alongside behavioral and technical interviews. It describes a case as a hypothetical scenario similar to the work in the role, and says mini case interviews are conducted in about 30 minutes.
What behavioral competencies does Capital One evaluate?
Capital One's behavioral questions follow the format 'Tell me about a time when...' and its interviewers assess competencies such as problem solving, influence and results focus. Its published company values are a separate and shorter list: excellence, and do the right thing.
Is there a coding assessment before Power Day?
Capital One does not publish one. Before Power Day it describes an automated assessment called the Virtual Job Tryout, 20 to 45 minutes of work-sample modules rather than coding, and, depending on the position, an hour-long virtual test of your knowledge of the position. It names no coding platform.
Do I need to be on video for Capital One interviews?
Yes. Capital One states that candidates must use video for all virtual interviews and should be prepared to remain on video for the entire duration of their interview(s). Interviews are hosted on Zoom.
How long does Capital One take to decide after Power Day?
Capital One says candidates most often hear a decision from their recruiter within two weeks of completing their interviews.
Is the Capital One business analyst interview different from the software one?
Substantially. Capital One says the analyst process typically starts with a mini case interview, then a virtual Power Day of two to three further case interviews plus a product strategy conversation. Its program list requires a case for the Analyst Development Program but does not list behavioral, job fit or technical interviews for it.
How should I prepare for a Capital One case interview?
Capital One's own guidance: there is no single right answer, your answer should take the form of a recommendation about what the business owner should do and why, you defend it with the evidence from your reasoning, and you should be able to explain your approach in non-technical terms. It also tells candidates not to discuss their resume in this round.

  • Process stages and their order: automated assessment, recruiter screen, hour-long virtual test of role knowledge, 30-minute hiring manager pre-screen, then Power Day. Power Day round definitions for job fit, behavioral and case. The "Tell me about a time when" format and the competencies problem solving, influence and results focus. Mini case interviews run about 30 minutes and apply to campus, business analyst, product manager and finance positions. Video is required for all virtual interviews.

  • The per-program interview matrix. The Technology Development Program & Internship requires behavioral, case and technical interviews, and is not listed among the programs requiring job fit interviews. The online assessment gates the Analyst, Machine Learning and Technology development programs. Power Day is the final round, and a decision most often comes from the recruiter within two weeks.

  • Power Day is reached after the recruiter and hiring manager phone calls, runs as a series of virtual interviews on Zoom, requires candidates to stay on video for the full duration, and does not include a case interview for every position.
